How Applied Kinesiology Works

Applied Kinesiology was developed by chiropractor George Goodheart in the 1960s. It uses manual muscle testing as part of a broader assessment. During a visit, the chiropractor may apply gentle pressure while you hold a position and observe how your muscles respond.

Your visit should also include a discussion of the collision, your symptoms, medical history, and goals. Depending on the examination findings, your chiropractor may discuss chiropractic care, movement advice, or another appropriate evaluation. Muscle testing alone cannot establish a diagnosis or replace medical testing for allergies or other conditions.

Applied Kinesiology FAQs

Applied Kinesiology is an approach some chiropractors use during an assessment. It includes gentle manual muscle testing. Your health history and a standard clinical examination remain important when deciding on care after an auto accident.

The chiropractor may ask you to hold an arm or leg in a particular position while they apply light pressure and observe the response. Tell them if a movement is painful or uncomfortable.

Muscle testing alone cannot diagnose an injury or replace an appropriate medical examination. Your clinician may recommend further evaluation or a referral based on your symptoms.

Muscle testing should not be used to diagnose food allergies, organ problems, or other medical conditions. Ask about appropriate medical testing if you have those concerns.

A chiropractor may use muscle testing alongside your history, physical examination, and other appropriate assessments. Any recommended care should reflect your individual findings and goals.

Manual muscle testing generally uses light pressure. Let the chiropractor know about any recent injury, pain, or limited mobility so the examination can be adapted.

That depends on your examination and care plan. Your chiropractor can explain the available options and discuss whether an adjustment or another approach is appropriate.

Expect a discussion of the collision, your symptoms, and your health history, followed by an examination. Your clinician can discuss any findings, next steps, and whether another evaluation is needed.
